Further significant fall in bankruptcies in 2016

Wednesday, February 15, 2017

The most recent snapshot taken by CRIBIS of companies in Italy shows a significant fall in bankruptcies: 13,467 companies filed for bankruptcy last year, down 7.7% compared to 2015. The reversal of the positive trend has therefore been consolidated, after years characterized by a constant increase in bankruptcies, which reached a peak in 2014.

Last year, on average 53 companies a day went bankrupt, but despite the gradual reversal of the phenomenon, there is still a wide gap compared to 2009: the percentage of bankruptcies has risen by 43.5% if current data are compared with those of 8 years ago.

Looking at the distribution of bankruptcies on a regional level, a close correlation with the density of active companies in the different parts of the country can be seen: Lombardy is the region with the greatest number of bankruptcies in Italy, with 2,839 cases in 2016, while the second highest hit region is Lazio, with 1,637 companies going bankrupt. In third place are companies in Veneto (1,168 cases) followed by Campania (1,143), Tuscany (1,052) and Emilia Romagna (982).

Looking in detail at sectors, the trade sector recorded the highest number of cases in 2016 (with 4,064 cases). This is followed by construction (2,764), industry (2,649) and services (1,995).
